Dragon Boat 2016

DB2016Amongst the many programs offered by the organization, the Dragon Boat Race is a much loved event that builds community connection by encouraging inter-dependency, empathy and inclusion between community members.  It is an educational space where participants learn to appreciate and value each other’s differences, find collaboration, commonality, and work to build mutual understanding.  In this event, both disabled and non-disabled community members reach out and work together in celebrating a Chinese-culture, and building an inclusive environment.

20 Paddles, 2 Drumsticks, 1 Common Goal.” This was the spirit taken to heart by all our dragon boat participants.  Last year, we managed to fundraise enough to support not one, but three dragon boat teams to race at the Dominion Day Regatta at the Toronto Centre Island.

The organization, the teams, and all the volunteers appreciate the dedicated work of Ontario Public Service (OPS) that advocated to breaking down the systemic barriers.  Sincere gratitude also goes to the Rusty Dragons (www.rustydragons.ca) that for the 4th year in a row supported the teams both financially and technically implementing special measures to accommodate accessibility without which the races for our teams would not be possible.

People with developmental disabilities have a right to culture.  Representation in this athletic and cultural event reflects acknowledgement of their struggles, yet resilience as proud members of the Canadian society who come from racialized, disabled, and transnational identities.  Our continued participation in 2016 at the Dominion Day Regatta highlights the ongoing history of our relationship with the Dragon Boat event, its significance for both our community and our right to culture, and our hopes to envision inclusivity among all members living in Ontario.
